Wealth: A Dream Or A Will?

March 8th, 2011

Do you dream of getting rich or do you want to be rich?

There is nothing wrong in dreaming of getting rich; except that you will get the dream, not the real thing.

There are three steps to wealth. I am reaching only the first one (so far), and I will speak only about what I know.

The first step to getting rich? A family income of 50.000. It may be more or less, depending on your location.

Why is it the first step? Because from that point you will be able to invest money, that is to say: to make money work for you. Until then, you have to work for money.

Work? Yes! Do not tell yourself anything you would not tell your kids. You know that people who get a degree, or higher diplomas, earn more than people who have never attended college, and more than people who went to college but failed to graduate. There is a lot at stake for you to stay at an elementary level and keep saying: “I know X who was a failure at school and nevertheless he has made it!” The lazy path provides 99.99% of its lovers with debts and broken dreams. The few who actually succeed struggle for 30 years. It would have taken less time and efforts to follow any course!

Choose carefully the domain of knowledge you want to master. It has to meet 3 requirements:

– You like it. If you cannot stand the idea of meeting the critically ill all day long, drop studying medicine, even if a cancer specialist earns a lot. You do not want to be rich to afford antidepressants.

– It is of high demand in growing companies: for you to grow as high and quick as the company.

– Either it is difficult to master or it can be blended with other specialized scope of activities: the narrower the niche, the higher the income.

Avoid the mistake I have made for years: do not work for almost nothing for the only reason that you like what you do. I liked to teach, was a good teacher and knew nothing about the other two requirements. I still like to teach, and I still am a good teacher. The very difference is that now I teach adults who are craving to learn French because they do have a project: to reach the first step of wealth. In their case, they need to master French and to blend it in their specialized scope of activity.

And you? What are you going to choose? Mining and Chinese? Refining and Arabic? Art History and Italian?

The first choice is rather simple: to dream of getting rich or to want to be rich.

We Are Not Mutts – The Critical Care Transport RN

We Are Not Mutts – The Critical Care Transport RN

Some things are simply a mystery and so goes the perceived role and importance that the Critical Care Transport (CCT) RN plays in the healthcare field. Other professionals seem to view us like mutts – a little bit of everything but certainly not a thoroughbred in anything.

I once heard a co-worker describe the job as something between a magnified EMT and a bench warmer. Such flattery – but what can you do?

Anyhow, I just wanted to set the record straight, so to speak, by pointing out the value and importance that the CCT RN brings to the table.

What’s so ironic about the perception is that most CCT RN’s are veteran nurses from the ICU or ER with certifications that give new meaning to the use of acronyms. Many hold certifications that consist of ACLS, PALS, CCRN, CEN, TNCC, PHTLS, ATLS and anyway – you get the picture.

Not to mention while other nurses were out frolicking in the sun on their day off; oftentimes, we sat in some hot, claustrophobic classroom in pursuit of greater knowledge. In addition, extensive training takes place before we are even allowed to come into contact with a patient, with classes ranging from airway management, advanced life support, managing portable ventilators, pharmacology, and trauma protocols.

As in all fields of nursing, the amount of information thrown your way is vast and at times can be a bit over-whelming. Of course, you must learn it all and then be able to repeat it verbatim, back to the instructor.

Of course, the rear confines of the ambulance is simply a mini ER. Believe me, there’s no such thing as a claustrophobic CCT RN. Standard equipment includes: IV pumps, pulse oximetry, monitor, airway equipment and a pharmacy of drugs. Pretty much all life saving procedures are provided here – CCT RN’s are trained to be prepared for anything.

Truth be told, to make it out there in the real world a CCT RN has to be intelligent, witty and quick on their feet. Murphy’s Law at hyper-drive is the norm and thus a solid foundation in the fundamentals of critical care along with extensive training prepares the CCT RN for anything and everything.

On the down side, regardless of training and experience, you can never be totally prepared but the key, irrespective of the circumstances is to always keep continuity of care from the sending to the receiving hospital. In most instances, patient care and outcome improves primarily due to this 1-to-1 ratio.

It’s an exciting and a personally rewarding profession that defines care one patient at a time. On the other hand; at times, it can be a thankless job but like our contemporary professionals we are all on the same team with the same goal – to care for the patient and get them to the next stage of recovery as quickly as possible.

Remember, we are not mutts, so the next time a CCT RN crosses your path throw us a bone in the form of respect – not a dog biscuit.

Want to freelance as a Programmer, Copywriter, or Web Designer?

Have you ever considered freelancing instead of being employed at a company? Ever thought of working independently from home? There are for sure thousandth if not millions of opportunities out in the internet that tell you about residual income within one or two weeks, with just as little effort as possible. These programs are promising and promising, again and again

Such a place is called a freelancer marketplace, and it may be one of the places on the internet to quickly find projects that fit to your skills.

One of the advantages of such marketplaces is that your reputation is increasing as you complete projects. For every completed project you are being rated by the project manageremployer along with a short review. And everyone knows that better ratings bring you more valued projects Also consider that it is also possible to freelance part-time to earn additional income to your actual job.

At WorkAsFreelancer.com you get the chance to sign up completely free and bid on any open project. If you win the project you get contact information and other details concerning your project. Wage For The New Grad

February 15th, 2011

Fresh out of college, most people are excited about landing that first job. Given that most grads do not have work experience or only had a part time job while studying, it is not easy to secure an executive position right away.

Starting from scratch, one has no choice but to start from the bottom in an entry-level position then in time move to the top. The challenge most grads face in applying for a job is the competition. Aside from those who just graduated, there are also those who have left the previous job and are looking for a new one.

According to hiring and compensation experts, there is not that much room to negotiate when one is just a fresh grad. This is because that person does not have substantial work experience as basis to negotiate for a higher wage compared to those who have already worked before.

The range of the salary fresh grads get are based on the course one has finished in college. To those who volunteered to be surveyed, it was found that people who graduated from the sciences were able to get a higher salary compared to those who graduated from the liberal arts.

A tip that may help a little in the negotiation process is knowing your potential and not easily giving in or selling yourself short. In the course of an interview, it will boil down to the how much you will be getting. Most fresh grads accept what is given immediately and reply ok ending it there.

It is best to only talk about the salary when an offer has been made. If the interviewer is good, it can wait. During that time, one can try asking how much the company will give for someone in that position then be able to negotiate about that further later on regardless of the figure that was given.

The applicant can then ask questions such as job responsibilities and mention that the contribution one can give to the company is more important than the salary you will be receiving showing the recruiter you are a team player.

Applicants can negotiate more by doing research on how much other companies are offering for the same job before giving an immediate answer. By knowing that information, it is possible for you to negotiate the salary offered for a little more.

Getting a job is not only about a salary. This includes other things that the company offers to its employees and by thoroughly checking out the other benefits and perks, it can also help in deciding whether the applicant should accept the job or not.

Vacancies rise to record

February 1st, 2011

UNEMPLOYMENT is set to fall further with the number of job vacancies rising to record levels, fuelling speculation of another interest rate rise.

National job vacancies in the three months to August rose 2.9 per cent, seasonally adjusted, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Job vacancies rose by 11.9 per cent in the year to August.

CommSec equities economist Martin Arnold said with job vacancies now at a record high, the unemployment rate was set to fall below 4 per cent – from its present 4.3 per cent – as business conditions encouraged bosses to seek more staff.

“The Australian economy is recording solid growth and business conditions are virtually as good as they get,” he said.

The strength of the economy led a frustrated John Howard to say the public was failing to give the government credit for economic management.

“I think there is a view in the community … perhaps a significant number that, for somehow or another, our economic strength and our economic stability and growth is happening naturally, that the economy is on autopilot,” the Prime Minister told a public forum at Ocean Grove on the Victorian coast yesterday.

He said this was one of the reasons why the government was faring so poorly in the public opinion polls: “I think people are starting to take the Australian economy for granted.”

Seasonally-adjusted job vacancies totalled 172,700 in the three months to August.

Mr Arnold said there were fewer than three unemployed people for every vacant job, the lowest level on record.

Business services has been one of the strongest growth areas, with 45,200 vacancies, 28.4 per cent more than a year ago.

The number of positions vacant in the communications industry has more than doubled to 2800 in the same period.

There was strong demand for labour in the construction, retail trade and transport industries.

Areas that appear to be less desperate for staff include hospitality, recreation and personal services.

The public sector is continuing to expand, with the number of vacant jobs 11.8 per cent higher than a year ago.

In the year to August, job vacancies in the boom state of Western Australia were up by 31.8 per cent, unadjusted, followed by the ACT, which was up 31 per cent.

Only Queensland had a decline, with year-on-year vacancies down 3.3 per cent.

Matthew Johnson, the senior economist at broker ICAP, said the rise in jobs vacancies should deliver employment growth of more than 2 per cent.

“This means that unemployment will probably fall lower, and that everyone from the Reserve Bank down will continue to fret about wage-push inflation,” he said.

High job vacancies and low unemployment is a traditional recipe for inflation, with a limit to how many positions can be filled.

There has, so far, been no evidence of wage inflation, with the average cost of labour rising broadly in line with costs in the economy. The next inflation figures are published on October 24.

UBS chief economist Scott Haslem said the growth in job vacancies would contribute to higher inflation in the final months of 2007. He predicted the Reserve Bank would raise interest rates in February 2008 to stop inflation going above the RBA’s 3 per cent target range.

However Mr Arnold said the increase in labour supply, coming from skilled migration, would not generate wages pressures.

Telecommuting Idea: Appointment Setter

January 18th, 2011

Most small business owners are very busy people who dont have a lot of extra time on their hands. They will happily outsource some of their daily time-consuming tasks to a telecommuter. One of these time consuming tasks is setting appointments. Appointment setting is a perfect occupation for a telecommuter. The employer doesnt necessarily need a full-time employee to set his appointments, but at the same time needs someone that is available the majority of business hours in case his clients call in, or to make calls at different times of the day.

A telecommuter is the perfect candidate for this position. As a telecommuting appointment setter you can work with your employers schedule. If he needs a few calls made in the morning and then wants you to be available for callbacks in the afternoon, you are there to help. Best of all, you are not limited to just one employer or client. You can easily work as an appointment setter for several business owners at the same time. This will allow you to make a fulltime income while allowing each employer to only pay you for a few hours per day or week.

Setting appointments is something you can easily do from home. All you need is a phone and some way to organize yourself. A computer with Microsoft Outlook, or an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of your clients schedules would work well. You could even do this with a good paper calendar at first.

You should have good telephone and written skills to work as an appointment setter. Previous experience as an administrative assistant or secretary is not necessary, but is definitely a plus when it comes to the skills you need and when you are approaching prospective employers or clients. You should also be fairly organized to be able to keep up with multiple appointments for multiple clients each day.

As an appointment setter you will be spending a lot of time both on the phone and on email. You will be checking in with your clients (the small business owners) on a daily basis and then spend the rest of your time contacting their clients, setting up and later confirming appointments. Of course you will also keep your own clients or employers informed of any changes or cancellations throughout the day.

If this is something you are interested in doing, heres how to start. Determine your hourly rate. You should take the going rate for a task like this in an office setting into consideration and then up it from there. Your employer does not have to provide you with an office, a computer, telephone or any other equipment. You are also most likely going to be an independent contractor, which means he does not have to pay for any of your benefits or taxes. You will be responsible for all this, keep that in mind when determining your rate.

Now its time to approach small business owners in your area with what you have to offer and start building a client base. Once you have a few happy clients, word of mouth advertising should start to bring you even more business.

Teaching English As A Foreign Language: A Life-Altering Challenge

January 11th, 2011

If you’re considering teaching English as a foreign language, congratulations. You’ve chosen a career that many people don’t attempt. Although it’s one of the most rewarding jobs imaginable, the truth is that it can be a massive commitment. Of course, if you have a passion for it, then the work involved will be a true pleasure.

There are two basic ways to teach English as a foreign language. One way is to do so in your home country. All over America and other English-speaking countries, there are English classes offered by the government and by various learning institutions. These classes are designed to help non-native English speakers learn English in a fast-paced, student-centered environment. Programs like this are great for EFL teachers who can’t make the commitment to travel abroad.

The other option is to teach English as a foreign language in another country. This is where the majority of teachers end up, since there is a much greater demand for teachers in the students’ native countries. Teaching abroad is also considered more of a challenge because of the travel required- most teachers are expected to spend at least a year at a time in the country where they are employed.

With the spread of English worldwide as an essential tool in business communication, many foreign students are ready to learn- and they’re not always children. Corporations and businesses also hold English classes for their employees who must communicate overseas. If you’re not afraid of travel, the field of job possibilities is nearly endless.

TEFL

The first thing you’ll need to obtain to teach English as a foreign language is a TEFL certification. This gives you the qualification to teach in a classroom and covers the basic structure of English grammar. There are several ways to become TEFL-certified. Many language schools offer one-month certification courses. Colleges and universities can also provide TEFL certification.

Although it is possible to get a job teaching English as a foreign language without certification, your chances of employment are not nearly as good. As more and more people become certified, competition for the good positions is increasing. We recommend TEFL certification for anyone who is seriously interested in this career.

Finding a teaching job

Even if your eventual goal is to teach English in your home country, you may want to seriously consider teaching abroad at first. Most teachers start out with at least a year in a foreign country, and the experience gained in doing so is nearly invaluable.

While we don’t necessarily recommend heading to a foreign country to find a job, you can certainly do so if you’re feeling adventurous. However, there are plenty of resources online that can help you line up a position before you go. Many TEFL certification courses offer job placements for teachers who are interested in going abroad, and these can be a wonderful resource.

Whether you’re in a foreign country or on home soil, teaching English as a foreign language can be a challenging field. Be prepared to work hard and devote a lot of time to your career, especially at first. In exchange for your efforts, you’ll be experiencing firsthand one of the most rewarding and interesting jobs there is.

Matching Your Skills To Find Appropriate Jobs

January 4th, 2011

Skills refer to the things you do well. The key to finding the most appropriate jobs in the industry is recognizing your own skills and communicating the significance written and verbally to a probable employer.

Majority of the most viable skills are those that are used in a variety of work settings. What are these skills? Would matching your skills to find the right job be successful?

* Determine your skills. This would help you in becoming the lead candidate of landing the job. A skill does not necessarily mean it was adapted in a work environment. If this would be your first job hunt and you have no job experience to date, you still have a chance in the industry.

Majority of skills, including knowledge-based and transferable, could be absorbed and developed as a volunteer, a student, a homemaker, or in your other personal activities. The skills you have used for these activities can still be applied to your desired jobs.

Organizing and listing your personal skills could help you easily fill out job applications, provide useful information for job interviews, and prepare quality resumes.

First, you should categorize the skills by separating your interests and aptitudes from your work experience.

1) Aptitudes and interest. These include all of your hobbies, activities you have been involved in the past, and all the things that interest you. By listing all of these down, you could examine the skills it takes to achieve each item.

Skills from aptitude and interest may be homemaking, playing basketball, fixing cars and many more. All of these items could determine if you are capable of working with a team, able to handle multiple tasks, have viable knowledge of human development, knowledge of electronics and ability to diagnose mechanical and numerical problems. The list goes on, but make sure to consider the skills that would be beneficial for a working environment.

2) Work history. This includes volunteer, part-time, freelance, summer and full time jobs. Once you have listed all your past employment, examine the skills you do work each work duty.

* Ask for help. As soon as you have your list ready, you could now go to job services that could help you acquire your desired job. You could also search job yourself. However, always remember to match your skills and abilities in your list to the needed skills and abilities of various jobs.

In most cases, people who seek jobs are threatened with job titles. This should not be the case. As long as your skills and abilities could meet the requirements of the workload and job title, your possibility of acquiring your desired job increases.
